Professional Artists
From the settled peasant societies, there sprung a class of professional craftsmen who belonged to a caste and are governed by religion. The occupation of these craftsmen whose craft is linked to a particular caste is handed down from father to son. Craftsmen had always been recruited from villages by princes, government and religious bodies on their ambitious artistic undertaking. Historic development of professional village craftsmanship, like its content, tends towards Indian classical art.
Non Professional Artists
The second largest group of artists and craft workers in the village consists of women whose artistic activities are bound up with home and family. They are non-professional artists. Artifacts are produced for local consumption and to a lesser extent, for use in trade. Material and techniques are, and have always been of purely local origin and hence adapted to the modest requirements of their home use
